Roundrable discussion summary

Topic: Should human cloning be adopted or not? And which groups are for or against it.

Participants:
For the idea:
Lim Yongmeng & Li Zirui
Against the idea:
Varsha & Guan Zheming
Main points:
“For” group:
1. We can make use of this high tech to cure more diseases which we have nothing to do with now. And it’s a must of the development of the society and the increasing need of the high quality medical treatment.
2. Some women just can’t give birth to their babies in normal way, and thus they need the technology of cloning to have their own babies, which sounds natural and moral.
3. It’s natural for people to show their deep love to their beloved people by the means of creating a “brand-new” one themselves. But we can make regulations to abandon them doing so.
“Against” group:
1. When the stem cells grow into some certain tissue or organ, they have formed a new life to some degrees. We cannot kill this kind of life just for the purpose of saving another life.
2. Some religious people consider that it’s God’s business to create human or other creatures. We should not “play God”.
3. The cost of human cloning is rather high and maybe not realistic.

(Main points of each participant’s argument are roughly listed above since each side roughly holds the same points of view.)

Assessment:
Being the first one to state view points, I roughly presented the 3 points of my group, i.e. the group who were for human cloning. Though I did not present all the points very clearly or perfectly, at least I was clear about what was going on and knew what to argue.
The process was rather rapid. We all managed to clarify the reasons why we were holding our views.
There are many aspects which I need to improve, for example, the way of presenting my point of views, the briefness of my words and the cooperation with my team mate. I learned a lot from the roundtable discussion and hope I will make more progress in the future.
